hi
Tips to help you choose whole foods energy bars!
It’s a jungle out there when you go to the aisle with nutritional bars. If you actually read the ingredients of most bars, you realize they are highly refined products, which do not meet the definition of real whole food. I call those, “food like substances”.
They contain isolated proteins (soy, whey), added fractionated fibers (inulin) and sweeteners in the form of sugar, brown rice syrup, tapioca syrup, or artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils (canola, sunflower, and soybean oils), corn and soy flowers are often added ingredients and not to forget they contain added synthetic vitamins and minerals.
Keep in mind organic doesn’t means whole foods, or healthy. There are a lot of organic processed foods/bars out there. Below are just two examples.
Today I share with you some criteria you can use when you search for energy bars that can make a great snack, while they are made of real whole foods ingredients:
- #1. If when you read the ingredients you feel like you’re reading the chemistry textbook, you know that’s not a whole food…
- #2. Grain free (I work with grain free diets, so that’s what I recommend-this is entirely OPTIONAL—if you’re still consuming grains, even whole grains, and would like to know why I say NO to grains, I recommend reading the book
Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers
, andWheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health
) - #3. No sugar, or artificial sweeteners added
- #4. No vegetable oils
- #5. Whole foods ingredients (no isolates and fractionates, additives, and preservatives)
Here’s one example of a whole foods bar
