Today’s episode in a nut shell:
Insulin
- a hormone produced by the pancreas in direct response to sugar and carbohydrates consumption
- an anabolic hormone—it supports fat storage, and helps your body use glucose for energy
- a highly inflammatory hormone
Insulin resistance means your body produces insulin but the insulin is not able to communicate with the cells to uptake the sugar from the blood. This translates into elevated blood sugar levels (pre-diabetes or diabetes)
Testing your fasting insulin level can give you early warning sings about the way your body metabolizes sugar, so you can intervene with therapeutic lifestyle changes, hence prevent the onset of diabetes
Otimal fasting insulin levels are <5 µIU/ml
Fasting insulin levels are best use in conjunction with fasting blood sugar and HbA1C
Vitamin D
- more than a vitamin, is a hormone that influences about 3000 genes in our body
- Is produced in the skin from cholesterol during sun exposure (UV B rays), and requires further activation steps by the liver and kidney
Optimal levels of vitamin D can prevent the onset of many disease form cancer, to autism, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions just to mention a few
Test your vitamin levels regularly (2 or more times a year-depending on your results)
The best test for vit D is called: 25-hydroxi vitamin D or 25(OH)D and is ablood test
Vitamin D levels according to Dr. Holick:
- Optimal 50-70 ng/ml
- Deficiency <50 ng/ml
- Therapeutic levels for Ca and heart disease: 70-100 ng/ml
- Excess: >100 ng/ml
Best way to get your vitamin D:
- Sun exposure
- Oral vitamin D3 supplements according to your blood values
Whatsch this video to see if you’re getting enough vitamin D from sun exposure.
Cortisol
- hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress
- helps you have enough energy to run from “the tiger”
In our modern living today we’re exposed to chronic stress which leads to overproduction of cortisol and can lead to serious health issues
High cholesterol = high blood sugar leves
This is how Dr. Cronin describes chronic overproduction of cortisol.
“Many people who have reached adrenal exhaustion their cortisol levels are just going to be a flat run throughout the day….”I’m exhausted, I can’t drag myself out of bed.”, and so they’re reaching for caffeine all day long or sugary sweets for a pick-me-up, and they’re saying “I can’t lose weight and I can’t sleep”
Cortisol is tested using saliva (4 or 6 point of collection), and your doctor will compare your 24 hour curve with a standard curve. Based on this you’ll get personalized recommendations that will help you get your cortisol levels into an optimal curve.
